WPC decking installation: joists, clips, gaps and drainage

1. Assess the substrate

Check falls toward drains, waterproofing condition (especially roofs), load limits and whether the finish must remain removable for HDB/MCST rules. Fix ponding before decorating over it.

2. Build or place the subframe

Joists may be treated timber, aluminium or pedestal systems. Spacing follows the board manufacturer — tighter centres for hollow boards or diagonal layouts. Keep the frame level enough that boards do not rock, while preserving drainage paths underneath.

3. Plan expansion and perimeter gaps

Singapore heat moves polymer boards. Leave end and side gaps as specified; do not jam boards hard against walls or glass channels. Floating or pedestal systems need edge restraint details that still allow movement.

4. Fix with the right clips or fasteners

Hidden clip systems seat in side grooves; starter clips and colour-matched face screws appear at edges. Use stainless or coated fasteners rated for outdoor humidity — mixed metals around pools need extra care.

5. Keep water moving

Never bury floor traps. Maintain open joints or ventilated cavities so humid air and spillover can escape. On pool decks, detail the coping interface so splash water does not sit in a trough against the first board.

6. Finish and handover

Clean cutting dust, check proud clips, confirm trap access and leave care notes. Warranty paperwork should state board grade and install date.

Common failures

• Zero expansion gaps → peaked ends after hot afternoons.
• Blocked traps → damp smell and biofilm.
• Underspaced joists → bounce and clip stress.
• Screws through roof membranes → leaks blamed on “the decking”.
